Does Anybody Care????
Hey Everyone
I am not going to be real specific because I might get in trouble but there are few things that really piss me off in the north. I know I have ranted in the past about airlines, the post office, prices at the stores, and other little things that after a few weeks I seem to get over them. This last event may take more than a couple of weeks. The most precious resource we have here in the North, as far as I am concerned, is our youth, and when the powers that be decide that they do not care enough, by their absolute inaction and fail to make decisions based on the best interest of the children, it certainly shows me that they do not care. I am more convinced than ever that the North is not the place for me and I must move to an area where the "care and safety" of children is tantamount.
I will leave it at that.
On another note, while my wife was visiting last week I learned what an etching was. I thought they were a drawing on paper, but the artist actually smooths out the soapstone and draws on it. My wife was extremely taken with the beauty and simplicity of them and has ordered me to gather up a bunch of them to take them home as Christmas gifts.

Speaking of Christmas, 4 weeks from tonite we will be in Iqaluit wending our way home for the holidays.
Cheers for now

with our kids, for now we are fine, but i think when they start school, we might pack our bags and leave the north.
I know what you mean. If I had a dime for every time I've seen kids gets short changed when it comes to Social Services, I could retire at 35.
what kind of churches are there in Cape Dorset? The North has always intrigued me.

Blake, the 3-4 sided carvings are lovely. Hear your comment on kids both your own and others...it is a frustrating reality that is faced by teachers and social workers, and I often only come in a crises situation when understaffed or no one in the community. Admire the persistence of teachers...hang in there!
I recently came accross your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I dont know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.

Personally, I think our greatest resource is our adults and they're also the ones raising our kids, and if people focused on making a better life for adults and giving them better personal skills, instead of trying to take the kids out of their home context and ignore the adults altogether, then that might work.
When I was living in Tsiigehtchic there were always three committees to decide anything: youth, elders, and mothers. Of all people, the one demographic that was not ever consulted for suggestions was the working men.
People say kids are the future... That always reminds me of the saying that "if you have a foot in the future and one foot in the past, you're pissing all over the present". That's a pretty good description of the north in my opinion.
Blake . . It is not the fact as you say "we dont care" .
It is the enviornment that surrounds us, the people that we look up to. Everything our parents done, we are bound to do. Its not really our fault. We are just following what we see, and how we grew up . . meaninglessly.
But I know some people absulotely dont give, only if it doesnt have anything to do with that person's interest. Im sure everyone would start to care if everyone just atleast wanted to care what they actually have to say. Everyone has their own story, and we cant compare ourselves to anyone else because we dont know compeletly inside and out about that person.
So, it isnt really the youth. It is the parents and how they are raising their chilern. Do not blame the youth.
I love the etching stuff.. I also want some in my house..
